How to transfer printed graphics to your deck

In this tutorial I will demonstrate a technique to transfer printed graphics to a blank skateboard deck, or any other wooden surface for that matter.
This technique works best for black graphics but it can be used to transfer color prints as well. It works best for laser prints but images printed on pigment-based inkjet printers can be transferred as well. Go wild and make something cool !
I stumbled upon this technique while experimenting with image transfers for my photography.

Materials you'll need
-a print of the graphics to be transferred, remember to print it mirrored.
-a blank skateboard deck
-a soft wide brush
-a sponge
-a rubber roller (optional)
-acryl gel medium

The rubber roller and acryl medium can be found in any artist supply store.
I prefer to use Talens Amsterdam Acryl Gel Gloss but others work just as well.
If you use another medium, be sure to choose one that dries transparently.

The transfer process

1. Print the image you wish to transfer onto ordinary white office paper. A black graphic will give the best results but you can also transfer color images using this technique. Here is a nice tribal dragon I found on the internet.
The final graphic will be mirrored so remember to invert the image prior to printing.

2. Tape the graphic to a flat surface and apply 2 coats of acryl medium to the image side of the print. Let dry completely between coats.

3. When dry, cut off the excess paper and apply a last coat of acryl medium.

4. Position the wet print (wet side down) on your deck.

5. Apply pressure using the rubber roller. Always roll towards the sides to remove excess medium and air bubbles. Keep your roller clean, if you get medium on it, wipe it clean with a wet cloth immediately. If you don't have a roller (or are too cheap to buy one) you can smooth things out with the palm of your hand.

6. Remove excess medium from your deck using a wet sponge. Be thorough, otherwise you'll have problems moistening the paper later on.

7. When completely dry, moisten the paper with water using a spray or a wet sponge. The print will become almost transparent.

8. This is the last step. Start rubbing the wet paper with your fingers. It will start to come loose. You will see your graphic appear slowly. Keep rubbing until you've removed all the paper. Don't worry about rubbing off the graphic, it should stay on nicely.

Let dry and presto ! you have now transferred your graphic to your deck :

9. Finish off the deck with varnish. This will deepen the blacks and saturate your colors.

Some last minute tips
-Use the acryl sparingly, the thinner the coat, the less visible the transparent edges will be.
-Be carefull with varnish, be sure to test compatibility with the acryl on a scrap before applying to your deck.
-It doesn't need to be blank wood, any surface the acryl medium will adhere to is suitable.

Thats all folks. Pimp your deck !
Be sure to send me a picture of your finished work !

Longboarding season is back !
This is my latest shape which I made for the Belgian freeride in Houyet on July 1-2 (aka the Frit'ride).
Deck : concave baltic birch laminate with wheel cutouts
Trucks : Randall R2 drop mounted
Wheelz : Abec11 76mm Flywheels 78a duro
Check out my pictures of the event, which was awesome.
Fantastic weather, very smooth asphalt, great company and lots of speed !

The board turned out to be SUPER carver, but stable enough for some straight downhill runs. My best board to date.

Longboards

I lived in California when the first skateboard craze hit. As a young kid, I was totally into skateboarding.
Tony Alva was a god.
Somehow the skate-virus never let me go and now I'm back into longboarding. Too old ? Never dude !

Whales in the San Francisco Bay ???

Greet and I made a two-week camping trip to the west coast in May of 2000. Greet had hoped to see some whales off the Mendocino coast but we missed the whale season altogether.
That's why I decided to photoshop her a souvenir, hehe.
The picture sits on our bookshelf in the living room and never ceases to amaze visitors.
